General Classroom Rules
In order to have a safe, comfortable and effective learning environment, students must abide by the school and classroom rules. There will be incentives for students who follow the rules. These rewards include positive praise, small prizes, lunch with the teacher, free computer time and positive notes/phone calls home. Students are expected to be respectful, cooperative and caring towards themselves and others. Students should keep all candy, toys, soda and gum at home. The school wide rules are outlined in the Colonial School District Code of Conduct and on the district website.
Expectations for School Work
Students are expected to complete class work and homework to aide in the educational process. Class work and homework must be completed neatly and in pencil. Every student is expected to do his or her best on every assignment. Class work not completed during class will be completed at recess or given as additional homework. Everyday during our class time your child will be learning through reading books, listening to quality children’s literature, teacher directed lessons, writing, sharing stories, completing center activities, working in small and large groups, and completing hands on science experiments.
Student Assessment
In fourth grade, students are assessed in reference to the Common Core Standards. There are four possible levels of achievement. Exceeding Standards (ES) in which the student is performing above grade level. Meeting Standards (MS) in which the student is achieving the standard of performance. Near Standards (NS) in which the student is close to meeting the standards and Below Standards, where the student is completing below grade level work. Students are assessed in language arts and math through the following methods:
· Ongoing teacher observation
· Completion of assigned work
· Class participation
· Periodic oral and written tests
Students are assessed in the areas of science and social studies through the following methods:
· Ongoing teacher observation
· Class participation
· Projects
· Journals
· Written tests
Homework/Agenda Books
Each child at Wilbur Elementary was provided with a spiral bound agenda book. This book is an extremely useful tool for student, parent and teacher communication. Every day the students will write their homework assignments and other important dates and deadlines in the book, which will then be stamped or initialed by us. Every night, please have your child show you the assignment book to make sure that homework has been completed and any notes written by the teacher have been received. Please insist, as we do, that your child uses this important organizational tool to stay on top of their schoolwork and homework.
Individual homework will be assigned for the different subjects. Please refer to your child's agenda for specific information and due dates.
Communication
The assignment book is the best way to maintain daily communication from home to school. We check all assignment books. If you need to contact the teacher about an issue that you would like to keep private, please do not hesitate to send in a note or call the office at 832-6330, and the office will direct you to our private voice mail and we will return the call promptly. E-mail is also a great method of communication: [email protected] or [email protected]. It is important to remember that open lines of communication help every child succeed, and we are a team focused on the achievement of your child. We are going to have a great year here at Wilbur Elementary!
